Leioa's past and present
Leioa is a town located in the Basque Country, near Bilbao. It started as a small farming village next to the Gobela River. People lived in farmhouses and worked in agriculture until the 1950s.
In the 1960s, many people moved to Leioa, and it slowly became more modern. Some farmhouses were replaced by factories, especially to produce steel, and the town began to grow.
In the late 20th century, Leioa’s design and buildings started to change more. New homes, roads, and public spaces were built. The town became more urban, with more services and businesses.
There are also monuments such as the Ondiz Hermitage, which is a small, historic chapel in Leioa, built in 1666. It has a simple design and is used for local celebrations. The chapel is part of the town’s cultural and religious history.
Today, Leioa has around 32,000 residents. It is still proud of its history. You can visit old places like the Elexalde Mill, which shows how people lived and worked a long time ago.
Leioa is now a mix of old and new roots, but also a contemporary town with schools, parks, and public transport. It has changed a lot, but you can still see signs of the past.
History of Leioa
Leioa has transformed from a collection of disconnected, industrial-era neighborhoods into a more unified and vibrant city. Once characterized by dormitory areas with limited social life, urban planning has now connected these neighborhoods, making them more accessible and pleasant to live in. With this change, Leioa’s population has grown steadily, and initiatives like LeioaGastro+KOM are helping to showcase the city’s diverse commerce and hospitality. At its heart lies the historic center—with landmarks like the Church of San Juan Bautista and the original school building, now the Leioa Conservatory—serving as a reminder of the town’s cultural roots.
